Scratching the Surface…
with Catherine Nicholls
In this 4 day workshop we will be creating unique fabrics using multiple techniques, and the layering of designs, and once we’re done finding the perfect “use” for your masterpiece. Students will gain confidence in colour theory as well as individual design development.
We will start with a few simple colour “rules”, some basic dyeing information, a few guidelines and then get right into hands-on dyeing techniques. Dyeing intuitively, we will explore low-water immersion techniques, tray dyeing, mono printing, shibori, folding and working with stencils as well as multicoloured and shaded dyeing techniques, saturated solid colours and how to blend the perfect colour match.
To turn our dyed fabric into successful art-cloths we will be layering designs by adding paint, print and stitch. (Along with our work on fabric this is your chance to dye just the right colour thread to go with your art cloth). Development of your own design will create a unique art-cloth: a thing of beauty all on its own or the start of an amazing quilt.
All dyes and chemicals required will be provided for this workshop. There is a $20 lab fee for the this course, payable to Catherine on the first day. A supply list is available from the office.
