When John of Patmos looked out from his cave towards the end of the first century CE, the nightmares that he saw of the commodification of everything (including humans) and the evil vision of people profiting from selling the tools of war seem pretty familiar to those of us living in 2019. John experienced a Roman Empire that used fear and hatred of the "other" to divide the people and distract attention from the Empire's own destructive policies - also much like today. Here (again, quite belatedly) is my homily at the 11.15 service at St Mary's Kerrisdale in Vancouver.
